I shot for a date a week. Generally they were cheap being as I didn't have excess money, but they were definitely dates and not "hanging out". With this goal, I had two options: find a new girl to ask every week (generally girls in classes I was taking at school who I knew had similar interests) or keep asking the same girl out. It was much easier to ask the same girl out so that is what I did for the most part.
